Advice:
Unless you really do not care about noise, I’d ditch the chassis. The combo is still a pretty good price especially if you use the “OBO” function. This would make a great pfSense build or NAS Killer 4.0 build. Find an ATX case for the motherboard, buy a CPU cooler, PSU, and you’re good to go. The LSI SAS2008 onboard uses physical SATA ports - no expensive SAS cables needed. If you do decide to use SAS drives, you will need some of these.

Total noob here and this feels like a stupid question: Can I just use the rack mount as is and say figure out a way to mount it under my desk, thinking of Combo 1. Would I need to get anything other than drives? I haven open space under my desk and this seems like a logical way around buying a case and such.
Yes you do not need a “real” rack you can mount it to a wall or desk. The only thing I would advise against is just keeping it off things like carpet which can have issues with static buildup. Combo 1 only needs drives and drive trays. Be aware that items that are that slim need to move a lot of air with those small fans so they are high rpm which makes them very loud in most cases. Probably not ideal for a desk.

Couldn’t you switch out those small fans with Noctua 40mm fans to decrease the noise? Not sure what you could do about the power supply’s fan noise.
Sure, but are you willing to pay $15+ / fan for 40mm fans that don’t provide enough airflow to adequately cool the system and drives?
They’re loud because they push the appropriate amount of air for the system. Anything less unfortunately is pretty inadequate, unless you make serious concessions to your hardware selections.

Ah fair point. Are there any fans that would provide the necessary cooling while not being ear bleeding loud? I’d love to use one of these in it’s original case, but I couldn’t handle the crazy fan noise.
I’m not aware of any currently, but we may or may not be trying to work with a company…
If you’re on the fence about the server just because of that, you could see how loud it is, and if it’s bad enough swap it to a 2U rosewill or something.

Ya that’s what I was thinking too after looking at your rackmount build up above. I’d probably just play it safe and move all of one of the combos into a Rosewill case to save on fan noise.

Is getting the Rosewill 4U with hot swap bays worth the price? I’m assuming it’s worth it only if you are planning on switching out drives a lot.
IMO, no. It’s super easy to swap drives in the 15 bay, and you can get those for around 50% of the cost of the 12 bay.
Roger that. Ya it is significantly cheaper without hot swap bays and also looks like just another piece of the server that could fail. I doubt it’d be easy to replace one of them.

My server arrive yesterday and it’s up and running. Took me a few goes to get IT mode flashed. At first I could get the system to recognize/boot from my USB flash drive but it worked once I figured out I should use the internal USB port rather than the external ports.
Which of the combos did you go with?
Kinda Combo 4, but chose a listing with 32GB of memory.
Where did you find it? I can add it as another combo.

I’m tempted to stick with this case for now. I need to find some mounting screws/grommets that will work.
